A web server is a computer system which is used to run a website. The server in question will receive a HTTP, which stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol, this requests web pages and assets such as images and sound from said website. It then transmits back to the client computer which has asked for them.
Web Server Application
This is a powerful piece of software which runs on web server hardware and its job is to host requested web pages and assets such as images, sounds, video etc. and serve them to computer systems which have requested them. Examples of these would be Apache HTTP Server; Microsoft Internet Information services (IIS).
Mail Server
A mail server usually consists of a storage area where e-mail is stored for local users, a set of user definable rules which determine how the mail server should react to the destination of a specific message, a database of user accounts that the mail server recognizes and will deal with locally, and communications modules which are the components that actually handle the transfer of messages to and from other mail servers and email clients.
Proxy Server
A proxy server acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource available from a different server. The proxy server evaluates the request as a way to simplify and control their complexity.
Router
A router is a networking device whose software and hardware are usually tailored to the tasks of routing and forwarding information. Routers connect two or more computers or servers, which do not necessarily map one-to-one to the physical interfaces of the router.
ISP (Internet Service Provider)
An ISP is someone or a company that collects monthly or yearly fees in exchange for providing thier subscriber with Internet access. An ISP might provide a dial-up service, cable, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) or other types of internet access. Some ISP's are local while others are national. A national ISP will provide access throughout most of the nation, while a local ISP will only serve subscribers in a limited region.
An IP address is a code made up of numbers separated by three dots that identifies a particular computer on the Internet. Every computer, whether it is a Web server or the computer you're using right now, requires an IP address to connect to the Internet. IP addresses consist of four sets of numbers from 0 to 255, separated by three dots. Computing internet protocol address is the numeric code that identifies all computers that are connected to the internet.
Fibre Optic Cables
This is a cable made up of super-thin filaments of glass that can carry beams of light. Because fibre-optic cables are light-based, data can be sent through it at the speed of light. Using a laser transmitter that encodes frequency signals into pulses of light, information and data are sent through the cable at incredible speeds. The receiving end of the transmission translates the light signals back into data which can be read by a computer. This is the cable used to connect the internet.
Web Browser Application
A web browser application is a client which lets the user browse the World Wide Web by requesting web pages and assets via a protocol called HTTP. Once the pages and assets have been received from the web server it is the browser’s job to render these on screen. There are many different types of web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Goggle Chrome and Safari.
Web Appliction Software
A Web application is an application utilizing web and (web) browser technologies to accomplish one or more tasks on a network, typically through a (web) browser. A web application is any application that uses a web browser as a client.
